YouTube Forcing Hindi

by Sajin on October 18, 2009

Am wondering what is it with all these mega websites that they suddenly decided all Indians ought to see the web in Hindi! It started with MSDN initially, which started showing a hindi page as soon as you select your country as India. Well, at least it happened only when you made a selection. They seem to have rolled back that policy, though.

YouTube is persisting with that stupid policy though. What sort of a “global” company is it that doesn’t realise people browsing from India are more likely to be able to read English than Hindi! Am not a Hindi hater or anything, it is just that am much more comfortable with the default English page. And hell, I haven’t read anything in Hindi after my ICSE exams!

Thought of reporting this to Google. There is a remote possibility that they somehow didn’t “get it” despite having a huge Indian population in the company and even after having offices in India, right? Well, there are far too many complaints in the forum and it is just that Google chose to ignore them all. Dear Google, you are becoming a Microsoft (or worse) faster than you would like to admit.

I completely agree!
What’s with these Google guys? Are they nuts?
I’m a proud Indian but that does not mean I read HIndi well. I took Hindi as a third language in school and it’s a real struggle to navigate through the site. And it’s not immediately apparent as to where you’d go to change the language to English.

Wrote to Microsoft regarding this as Google is anyway not going to respond. Got the below reply.

I believe this behavior is actually keyed off of the language settings of your browser, not based on your IP address.

Check your IE settings under tools->options->languages. You may see a list of languages here, including the HI-IN language/locale combo which you may not be interested in. If so, you should delete these from your browser

I had only en-IN in my settings i.e. English (India) and not hi-IN. Still the Hindi version was coming up. Once I removed en-IN, the Hindi version stopped coming up on Youtube also.

I am a south Indian and I was furious when I saw youtube in Hindi, it took me forever to go to the US version and figure out how to change the language. What on earth is half of India’s population going to do now that youtube is in Hindi? Not that I hate Hindi or anything but I hate the fact that it is being shoved down our throats.

delete cookies . then search “youtube in english version” and click broadcast link. Now you tube will open in english . goto the bottom of the page . there set county and language . done .

@kris,
None of us were saying we do not know of a work-around. It is about the assumption someone made, to apply the locale at a nation level, that is being pointed out as stupid.

See my comment above. A language-locale of en-IN (which means my locale is India and my preferred language is English) is triggering youtube to behave that way, just taking “IN” into consideration and ignoring the “en”.
